The Inspiration of Words

February 4, 2012 · 0 comments

There are a number of things that inspire me as a designer (head over to my Meet the Designer page to read more about what inspires me). Today, I wanted to briefly share how I am inspired by words, and words alone. Although words may seem so simple to most, to a designer, one word can literally inspire the creation of an entire space!

With the holidays behind us and Spring in the very near future, I began thinking about what I want our home to feel like. What type of atmosphere do we want to create when guests come over to visit? When a guest walks into our home, I want them to feel safe, secure, peaceful, loved, non-judged, and to stay as long as they want, just to name a few. Well, one might ask ‘how in the world would you design your home to feel like those words described above?’ Today I want to take you through a little part my design brain and how I transform the feelings of words into feelings of a space.

Let’s take the word peaceful. What words come to mind when you think of peaceful? This word can mean a number of things: quiet, still, calm, warm… Next, I begin to develop those feeling words into design words. In a designer’s world, the word peaceful means: organized, subtle, soft, clean, intimate, alone, rested… Finally, I take my design words and look at design elements that would best represent these words. Below is an example of design elements I have begun to choose to create a ‘peaceful’ space.

1: Parsons Bison White Bench | Room and Board
2: Kenya Pillow 24″ shown in Steel | Z Gallarie
3: Timber Candles shown in Melon White | Z Gallarie
4: Recycled Glass Vases | West Elm
5: Esme Pedestal Table | Crate and Barrel
6: Chilewich Doormat | Crate and Barrel
7: ColorLab 610 Color Scheme | Design Seeds

Feeling inspired? What feelings do you want your space to encompass, whether your house, apartment, or even business office? Leave a comment below or head over to my Contact Page to get in touch with me. I would love to hear what inspires you!
