WHY DID YOU WANT TO START OLIOS?

I have always wanted to open a design business. When I landed a full-time design assistant job in Washington, DC I knew Olios was not far away. Of course the thought of running my own business scared me a bit (taxes, invoicing, and even keeping a time log were in the forefront of my mind), but as a designer, within every challenge there is inspiration and so I plunged full force ahead. Day by day, little by little, I began typing up a business plan, jotted down short-term and long-term goals, and even began number crunching. I knew I wanted Olios to be more than just another interior design firm. I had a vision of connecting with clients, reaching out to the community, and bringing the art and inspiration of design into every space in the Greater Washington DC area. A budget-savvy designer myself, I wanted Olios to be dedicated to enhancing the lives and businesses of each client within every price-point. With the help of some public resources as well as advice and guidance from friends and fellow colleagues, Olios began to take shape. As with all businesses, Olios is always a work in progress and I am excited to be continuously updating you on this adventure!

WHAT DOES THE WORD OLIOS MEAN?

The word Olios is plural for olio. Olio refers to a mixture of heterogeneous elements or items. The spanish origin, olia, translates to a pot, stew. DC is a very diverse region, made up of a variety of cultural backgrounds. In essence, Olios refers to this mixture of culture in and around the greater Washington DC region and the various elements of interior design that can be brought into this city.

WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LOGO?

with every design decision there are four (4) key elements that are considered: functionality, quality, cost, and aesthetics. The four (4) background circles represent these 4 elements. The darker circle represents the concept that within each design decision, one key element always will outweigh the others, and that is different for every decision. The center circles in white represent the first letters of the words Olios and Design. Grey and white were chosen because they are neutral colors and can be represented within every design.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN?

While many may think hiring an interior designer is a luxury, I am here to tell you that it is a necessity! Designing a space means more than selecting paint colors and artwork for the walls, or finding good bargains on furniture pieces. Interior design is very different than interior decorating, although many may think they are the same (or similar). While the aesthetics and comfort of a space are important aspects of design, Interior design focuses on space planning, building codes, and the overall flow and feeling within a space. Interior design is a form of fashion- your space is to reflect you and you lifestyle. I find inspiration for interior design in everything I do. From the front door on the 1950’s bungalow in my parent’s hometown to park benches in the dog park, interior design truly shapes the world we live in- most of the time, we don’t even know it. I believe the profession of interior design can change lives and have major impacts on everyday living. The philosophy behind Olios reflects my belief and I hope it is recognizable through everything Olios designs.

WHY SHOULD I SEEK SERVICES FROM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER LIKE OLIOS?

Hiring a designer can save you time, effort, and money. As highly trained professionals, designers know how to work with contractors, architects, and vendors. Designers also can help define and enhance your wants and needs while also addressing issues like building code and accessibility. Interior designers also have access to a variety of resources the general public may not be aware of.

WHEN SHOULD I HIRE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?

You can hire a designer for any project you need assistance with. Whether you are buying or building a home, renovating an existing space, or in need of a little guidance to get you started, you should always consult a designer first before moving forward. You may also want to hire a designer for consulting services.

DO YOU CHARGE FOR AN IN-HOME CONSULTATION?

Yes, we charge a one time fee of $150 for an initial design consultation. We feel by charging for our consultations, it allows both the designer and client to relax and get to know each other. During this initial consultation, project goals are discussed and the general scope of work is considered. The designer may even give some initial design advice. It is then up to you, the client, to decide whether or not the project should move forward. We value our professional design services and want clients to do the same.

HOW DOES OLIOS CHARGE FOR THEIR SERVICES?

Our fees are based on individual projects. Typically, we will charge per hour, but this depends greatly on the size of the project and type of service(s) desired. We discuss our fees in-depth in our initial design consultation.
