Why Choose Handmade?

Today I am mixing it up a little bit with a guest post. I hope you enjoy the topic!

It is unbelievably frustrating when you spend time looking for a particular type or style of furniture for your home but cannot find what you are looking for anywhere especially if you have spent ages decorating, organising lighting, preparing the curtains and everything else. There is a simple solution to this problem – handmade furniture.

OK. This can rightly be seen as a bit of a luxury, but if you are looking for something unique, the end result will be well worth paying for and it may not cost as much as you think. It is ideal for those with an unusual space to furnish or anyone who needs a custom made piece to give their home that special look they want to achieve.

Whether or not you have a clear vision of the piece you want in your head, having an item of furniture designed just for you brings so many benefits that ‘off the shelf’ furniture just can’t give you.

A bespoke design

First and foremost when you have a piece of furniture created for you, you gain complete control over every aspect of it, from the materials used to the exact dimensions, the colour, the finish and any other details you choose to incorporate. Essentially you have the opportunity to reflect your personality through the design of the furniture.

It is a great feeling to be able to own furniture that is a one off piece. No one visiting your house will say out loud or to themselves, ”Oh, we’ve got a table just like that.” Instead it will become a talking point and people will want to know where it came from and compliment you on your style and originality. Cue self congratulation.

High Quality Materials Mean Durability

Off the shelf furniture is produced in large volumes and in order to keep the price tag reasonably affordable, low grade materials are often used. Whilst there are lots of advantages to the buyer who wants to get their hands on low cost furniture without any hassle or waiting, wear and tear on this type of furniture can be an issue due to a fundamental lack of quality in the very materials that make up the furniture itself.

It is common for people commissioning bespoke pieces to do so with the intention of keeping it for the rest of their lives and then passing it onto their children or grandchildren. It is this inherent craftsmanship and attention to detail that make all the difference. No one with a handcrafted wardrobe for instance is going to sell it at a bargain price in a yard sale a few years after buying it brand new!

For maximum durability, it is crucial to use the best quality materials when having a custom piece of furniture created. This does mean spending more but as should be clear by now, bespoke furniture is an investment.

Take a wooden item built from a premium quality hardwood like Teak, Iroka or Walnut for example. This will look fantastic for many years ageing gracefully, whereas a piece constructed out of soft pine or a wood composite, would not have the same lifespan and its appearance would suffer as soon as it was knocked or damaged.

Finding The Right Company To Create Your Furniture

Try looking for a reputable furniture maker with a portfolio of work you are attracted to. Don’t rush. There are lots of craftsman out there creating all sorts of styles so one thing is for sure and that is that eventually you will find the one for you.

A well-established professional company will be proud to display their work and more than happy to provide references from previous clients. Discuss your requirements and obtain a quote and remember to ask questions about timescale, delivery and shipping options early on so that you know exactly what to expect later on down the line.

The Process….

With a clear image of what you want in your mind, you could perhaps try to put your ideas down on paper to give your furniture designer a clear impression, or at least an idea of what you are looking for. The designer may even make suggestions that will help you to create something that exceeds your expectations and takes you in a whole new direction you hadn’t previously thought of.

If you have seen something that has inspired you or you want to replicate a piece you love, take some photographs for the designer to work from. Alternatively if you’re open to a bit of a design adventure then you could simply give the designer a rough brief to go on and let them create something for you. Only do this though if you are completely happy with the style the company designs and builds and you like surprises!

Turning Your Ideas Into A Reality

A quality piece of handmade furniture creates an attractive focal point in your home; in fact you could theme an entire space around that key piece. Because it is built to last, quality furniture can be handed down to other generations gradually becoming an heirloom.

Bespoke furniture is a luxury, but if you can afford to it then it is well worth paying a little bit extra for something that is really special. A talented craftsman can easily create furniture that will transform your home interior and leave you with something to treasure for the rest of your life.
